I was really pleased to be able to shoot the the 2nd annual Ohana Dana Point music festival at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California. The festival was held between September 8 – 10 and drew an amazing crowd of around 20,000 people.
I took my Nikon D750, my Nikon 24-70 2.8 and also my Nikon 70-200 2.8 lenses, filled with a pair of 64mb memory cards and 8 spare batteries. I used to take two cameras and have everything hanging off me, but since doing a bunch of festivals this year I feel being more nimble, more agile means the opportunity to capture special moments are increased. I pack the spare lenses, cards and batteries into a lightweight backpack, which enables me to run around on stage, off stage, in the pit, and around the crowd.
On of the highlights of my festival was being able to shoot Haim. The three sisters absolutely stole the festival with their sweet sounds and great vibes… and left the crowd wanting more.
Social Distortion, Eddie Vedder and Jack Johnson headlined this year’s installment of Ohana Dana Point. The Pixies, Haim, Ray LaMontagne, Fiona Apple, Glen Hansard, TV On The Radio and Dr. Dog were also among the acts that played Ohana Dana Point ’17.
Vedder raved about the event from the stage at last year’s inaugural festival, “Being able to hear music (maybe even live music) while you’re on a wave…we did that today…To invent something, that the people who had the very last row have the best seat in the house, ’cause they can see the ocean and see the music…I hope you like it as much as we hoped and thought you would.”
